nickstrocchia > One of the cooler things we got to do in my time with the JSTARS program was air refueling. You would not believe how close two 300,000 pound aircraft get when transferring fuel from the tanker to our jet. At the time I thought this was a pretty arbitrary shot, but the low aperture and moderate shutter speed turned out a very sharp picture, which I think can be attributed primarily to the lighting present. I have ton of these shots, so please check back if you like what you see.

nickstrocchia > This is a shot of one of my favorite Mission Crew Commanders, (Ret.) Lt Col Jim Roman, a great guy and the absolute definition of old school. I was one of the first people off the rotator coming home and I positioned myself to capture everyone touching down back in the states for the first time in three months. There was a mix of a lot of emotions, but I really think the expression of indifference was captured perfectly here. You’ll see that in a lot of old dogs, like the Army Lt Col in the foreground to the left. I was starting to feel it too, which I took as my cue to leave the Air Force.

nickstrocchia > Opposite is SSgt Clint Yancey, this dude is always upbeat and a ton of fun to be around.

nickstrocchia > While I was an instructor I was able to leave my students (if they knew what they were doing), and move around the aircraft. When we were over the mid west I was sure to bring my SLR. I really like the KC-135 silhouette against the background and the mountains below. Shots like this really make me miss being a flyer.

nickstrocchia > This group shot was put up by request from my old squadron, the mighty 12 ACCS! On our way out to an air exercise in Korea we broke down in Anchorage, AK for a week and what an amazing experience! Right before we left to depart our squadron commander wanted a picture of the group. I wanted to capture the jet, the crew, and the mountains in the background, which made it tough for me since the sun was directly facing off the nose of the jet. I noticed the melted snow by the nose gear and had a pickup truck pull over so I could stand on top to maximize the reflection. The sun provided a great hair light and with a little bit of photoshopping the picture came out quite well.

nickstrocchia > Vegas has some incredible sunrises, along with just about any other extremely dry climate, so it was a nice surprise to catch these clouds rolling off the field. I snapped this shot just as we were about to get back on the jet and head back to Robins AFB and am really glad that I had my SLR on me, right place right time!

nickstrocchia > Another shot from underneath a tanker. Believe it or not, the colors were not tweaked all that much in photshop. A majority of the edits involved masking off the sky and the ground to kill the noise and sharpen the details from the earth.
