One of my loyal clients (The Century Council) hired me to shoot a long list of Attorney Generals one day at the Hilton in DC. Between shoots I wandered around the majestic hotel and noticed these vines in the courtyard. It wasn't all that interesting to look at in color, but the black and white conversion drew away the associated complexity and placed the foucs back to the subject matter.

nickstrocchia > I love going to NY, and photography just makes my trips that much sweeter. This building is close to Ground Zero. I really love how the shadows and reflections play into this image, especially the clouds.

nickstrocchia > These houses are just down the street from my apartment, right off 18th street. One thing I enjoy about DC is the individual architecture, you can tell a lot of the houses were built by the same builder, but it’s nice to see the subtle difference each one has, adding to the individuality of the city.

nickstrocchia > Took this one right before the Bassment Breaks show in Bethesda. Over the years a lot of new buildings have seemingly come out of nowhere in my hometown. This one wasn't all that visually appealing but this structure that sat at the top was pretty cool. Combined with the night backdrop, lights, and architecture, this shot melds a good blend of complexity and simplicity.

nickstrocchia > Another one of my top picks; this is a shot of Connecticut Avenue in Dupont Circle. Notice the foreground, that is NOT lens distortion, the sidewalk is actually shaped like that and it does make me want a fisheye lens. I really like the composition of this photo and the two lights at either end really bring everything together. I shot this during the day, but with photoshop I added a gradient black backdrop that makes a strong contrast.

nickstrocchia > An additional shot from Dupont Circle right in front of Buffalo Billiards. A bunch of my friends were running in the Idiotarod in 08; I had to be somewhere later on and couldn't afford to go out drinking with them during the day. Instead I grabbed my rig and got on my bike to follow them around and see what I could capture. Just before they set off a rainstorm came in from out of nowhere and disappeared just as soon as it got overhead. Right before the rain came down I snapped this shot.

nickstrocchia > One more from Dupont Circle. My friend Greg is a web developer and he asked me to take a shot of this building for an upcoming site he is working on ((http://hitotoki.org/dc/). The story behind the shot revolved around a woman and where she was standing when 9/11 went down. Check back to see if and when it gets posted.

nickstrocchia > More NY architecture, I really like the contrast between the building in the background and the one in the foreground. Just like DC, NY has a lot of flavor and I could spend an entire day shooting buildings, but things like sleeping, eating, and prior engagements get in the way!

nickstrocchia > I think that Amy shot this picture; I know it's in NY and is just a random spot we happened to pass by. You're looking at a pillar in front of a brownstone. I like the recessed solemn face and the lines that bring it together. I bumped up the noise and contrast to give it a nice punch.

nickstrocchia > Adams Morgan day is a great annual street festival. Even if you're not a big fan of the area you can't beat a good summer day outside combined with street vendors and "meat on a stick." I took this right in front of Bukom Café where a group of drummers set up for the day. There were a lot of vibrant colors in this picture and I was torn between leaving it as is and converting it to a black and white. I of course chose the latter and am pleased with the results. I think that the absence of color in this picture doesn't distract from the energy coming from the drummer.

nickstrocchia > Another shot from my military days; when I was in the Air Force I was an expert at coaxing the security forces into letting me shoot on the flight line, and it paid off. I really dig this picture and chose to black out the sky to contrast the white tarmac, I just wish I had shot more during my time in!

nickstrocchia > One more picture I can't take complete credit for; this one is from my friend Marc Guerrero, a JSTARS pilot. A great dude with a great eye for pictures. We were TDY in Vegas in May of 2007 when he took this shot of the Grand Canyon.

nickstrocchia > This is another one of my top picks; a very majestic shot of a monster truck. Amy and I went down to Hampton, VA for Monster Jam one weekend and wouldn't you know it, they had no problems with SLR cameras at the event! I got a lot of great shots that night, but this one really stood out. These trucks are straight piped and produce a lot of exhaust in the arena, be prepared to either shoot through the haze or spend some post production time making your subjects break out.

nickstrocchia > Here's a picture of my cousin Christian rushing to the water with a skim board. Like the rest of my family, you can't keep the kids out of the water, and I think his eagerness is captured perfectly in this shot.
